A manageable path to independent cybersecurity assurance

General Data wanted an independent assessment of its baseline cybersecurity controls without unnecessary administrative complexity. The organization completed CyberSecure Canada certification in March 2024.

The audit experience

General Data implemented its controls and provided evidence for Complade’s independent audit. The audit report distinguished conformity from major and minor nonconformities, giving the team clear findings to address.

The client’s reported outcome

James Hoyt describes the process as a reasonable, achievable challenge for a small or medium-sized enterprise. He valued a report that made the findings easy to understand and helped the team proceed through the certification process.

Independent assurance for a community lender

Trenval, a Community Futures development corporation in Belleville, Ontario, manages a loan portfolio and handles personal and banking information. Executive Director Amber Darling describes its CyberSecure Canada certification experience in August 2024.

The audit experience

Preparation involved coordinating management, staff and the organization’s IT (information technology) specialist. Complade reviewed documentary evidence in Stage 1, followed by an on-site Stage 2 assessment of the applicable controls. The auditor explained the findings as the assessment progressed.

The client’s reported outcome

Amber recalls receiving the audit findings at the end of the visit, including minor issues and a recommendation for certification. A recommendation is distinct from the independent certification decision. The experience gave the team clear actions and supported assurance for its board and stakeholders.

A constructive audit with clear corrective actions

Algoma Mutual Insurance pursued CyberSecure Canada certification with the participation of its IT (information technology) service provider. President and CEO Cameron Ross describes an efficient, professional audit and productive discussions with the Complade team.

The audit experience

The organization and its IT (information technology) provider supplied evidence for assessment. The audit report distinguished minor nonconformities from observations and clarified the findings requiring action. Algoma Mutual remained responsible for its corrective actions.

The client’s reported outcome

At the time of the interview, about two weeks after certification, Cameron reported that the team was close to completing its corrective work. He also discussed plans to use the certificate in the insurer’s annual cybersecurity review. This was an intended use, rather than confirmation of acceptance by an insurer.
